Lookism: Ugly?

If you think something is ugly,
look harder.
Ugliness is just a failure
of seeing.

― Matt Haig, The Humans
Goal: Introduce students to different ways of looking at the concept of ugliness to engage them in critical thinking and conversation to brainstorm ways to honestly combat perceptions of and responses to "ugliness".

The assignments that have activities are in red.

3. What is Ugly?
Picture
Note of Understanding:

The word ugly just like the word pretty is subjective, although according to many, there might be "classic standards".

By no means are the categories here meant to imply that people with disabilities are involuntary celibate men (incense) or are "ugly", only that these groups may have experienced discrimination, bullying, or worse in our society.

This section is meant to be a way for us to self-reflect on implicit biases that we might have that might impact interactions and the way we look at and treat others. We don't know until we hold a mirror up to our unconscious experiences of others.

The hopeful ultimate outcome is to reduce microaggressions, increase empathy and understanding, and to broaden everyone's experience in forming supportive healthy relationships.
