The first chapbook I created for students is entitled, About Me. Each poem in the collection was inspired by observations and interactions with students.
When a colleague asked to buy a class set as an introduction to poetry for her ninth graders I put together mini lessons that could be used for the poems. It has always been my goal to write readily accessible poetry and it is a delight that it is being used to reduce anxiety and help boost student confidence, to help them understand that poetry is not a foreign language for Martians. It is meant to feed and reveal, to encourage and challenge, to comfort and make uncomfortable by telling a truth rumbling somewhere beneath the surface. It is as liberating as a skateboarder breezing down a sidewalk and passing all the no skateboarding signs.
Note: Some of the poems have been changed since the original version, some deleted and other added.
